Anxiety relief is something that’s not always easy to find. But one of the best approaches I’ve found is to start to slowly eliminate the trivial thoughts we have that have the potential to lead to true anxiety. In the short-term, this can provide anxiety relief. And in the long-term, this can stop many panic attacks from ever happening in the first place.

In this video, I share some ideas with you that I’ve used myself to stop many of these unwanted and potentially harmful thoughts. These are very simple ideas, but ones that really do have the potential to put a stop to many of these unpleasant thoughts.

And hopefully, after watching, anxiety relief will be one step closer! Also, please feel free to comment in the box below.

And finally, just in case you have any problems playing the video, I’ve put links below to the digital book and podcast versions:

I always play out scenarios in my mind as well, I was taught once about a way of stopping negative thoughts and this is called a ten day mental fast. What you do is for ten days you have to monitor your thoughts as they pop into your head, you don’t have to write them down, just acknowledge them, if negative thoughts last more than a few moments you have to start the mental fasting again, once you get to 10 days you keep going.
It does get easier, I had to start over and over again, still do sometimes, but I have noticed that I go for periods of time where I am peaceful and realize that I haven’t thought of anything negative.

Hope this helps someone as well.

    Hi Alex,
I’ve begun doing this and it does work! Not only do I feel benefit mentally but I also feel my body relax. Muscles that I didn’t even know that were tense automatically let go of their tension. I am also sleeping better and use this technique if I wake up in the night.

Its a case of not reacting to thoughts, just noticing them and then my state begins to change - and so the outside world.

Thanks for all the help you give. You are doing a great. great job and your voice is so easy to listen to, your manner so calming.

    Great to hear from you!

Joan, thank you for such kind words. A few weeks back I did the video where I spoke about having highlights to look forward to in your week, and receiving such lovely messages like yours has become one of my *own* highlights :)

Ryan, you sound like you’re making great progress! Make sure you keep me (and all of us!) updated as the progress continues!

Renata, that sounds like in interesting thing you were taught about the 10 day mental fast. Maybe you could explain it in more detail, because I’d like to give it a try!

Peter, well done on actually giving these ideas a try, and it’s great to hear it’s working so well. This whole “not reacting to thoughts” idea is something I’m a big believer in, and I have more things on this subject coming soon :)

my fave thing you have told us is how our anxiety isn’t real. i think you should expand on this. its a brave thing to say b/c i’m sure some people would think “another person who thinks i’m doing this to myself!” but we are. please get us more info on how it is all in our minds.
btw, it ook me so long to read this b/c my computer was out of commission. take care alex. thanks again.

Hi, I just found your site and I am grateful! My anxiety has gotten so bad it is hard to leave the house because I get dizzy but mostly because the irony is I have anxiety over having an anxiety attack so I think I force myself into it…. Its all I think about from the moment I leave the house and I feel like I cant think of anything else or concentrate on something simple like grocery shopping. I am going to try these tips… Thank you!

The breathing technique is excellent. Will try the paper bag trick , just find getting a paper bag these days not that easy.Would a plastic bag still work? My life has certainly improved since I have been with you. Thank you , God Bless…Pam

    Hi Alex,

Im new to leaving comments on websites BUT not to Anxiety, panic and depression!

Some really interesting video’s and you have really “hit the nail on the head” on more than one occasion during my visit to your site!!!

My main issues have been depersonalisation and fear of panic, fear of what might happen etc, etc, but i will now be using your blogger suggestion amongst other ideas which i have taken from you and the anxiety guru.

Thanks to people like you us suffer in silence types can really make light of what can only be considered as a potentially debilitating illness!

Thanks for your help, and im sure to visit again soon!!

    Matt.
